Payroll in South Africa is not hard because the maths is hard. It is hard because the rules are specific, they change every tax year, and getting one of them slightly wrong is invisible until SARS asks.

So the tax engine came first: pure functions, tested to the cent, no database anywhere near them. The same inputs always produce the same payslip, and the test suite proves it on every change. Everything else was built around that.

SARS, the BCEA and POPIA are the foundation here rather than bolt-ons. The UIF cap, the three separate gross definitions, the three-year sick leave cycle: designed in from the first line, not patched in after a support ticket.

We are deliberately unglamorous about it. Payroll is infrastructure. Infrastructure earns trust by being boring, and by being right.
